Root North Farmshop & Cafe stands out as a relaxed café nestled in Timau, just on the edges of expansive farmland with sweeping views of Mt. Kenya. It’s a spot where locals and travelers alike pause to enjoy more than just coffee; the setting plays a big role here. The wide, manicured lawns give a sense of openness, ideal for stretching out on a sunny afternoon or settling in for a slow morning with a view of the mountain peaks.

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, with a vibe that suits a laidback brunch, a coffee date, or a family outing thanks to the presence of a small playground for children. The café caters well to those who appreciate simple, quality coffee—rich and aromatic, often enjoyed alongside baked goods that lean towards healthy and homey. The carrot cake muffin has become something of a favorite for visitors, moist and flavorful without being overly sweet.

Food-wise, while not a full restaurant, Root North delivers satisfying plates that feel hearty and thoughtfully prepared. The steak pie, for instance, breaks the mold of typical café fare by packing generous tender chunks of meat rather than just a pastry shell with gravy. Other dishes like beef ragu and chicken mayo sandwiches have drawn praise for their comforting flavors and freshness, making it more than just a quick coffee stop.

Visitors will find the café especially appealing during daylight hours when the mountain views come alive under bright skies or soft, diffused light. However, the location’s altitude means that it can get quite chilly, so a warm drink indoors or a cozy spot by a window can be the best way to soak it all in.

Root North works well for anyone looking to combine some light dining or a quality coffee break with nature’s backdrop. Hikers, families, and those passing through northern Kenya’s highlands will appreciate the calm, grounded feel of this café, where friendly service and scenic surroundings create an easy escape from busier town centers.

If you want a meal with a side of epic Mt. Kenya views, Root North is the spot. I came for the scenery but stayed for the unreal Steak Pie—and yes, it’s packed with actual tender steak, not just a sad layer of gravy and bread. Every bite was hearty, flavorful, and seriously satisfying. The café itself has such a cool, laid-back vibe—perfect for a lazy brunch, a coffee date with a mountain backdrop, or just chilling after a hike. The staff were super friendly, and the whole place just feels like a hidden treasure. Honestly, between the jaw-dropping views, the legit food (that Steak Pie though ), and the good vibes, Root North is a 10/10 experience. Do yourself a favor and go—just save me a slice of pie next time!

One of the Northern Kenya’s best coffee shops, set around beautifully manicured lawns on the edge of an expansive farmland, with awe inspiring views of Mt Kenya and the hills around. Simply, you’ll love the views, trust me. The staff are warm and very friendly. The coffee is fine! And lots of healthy pastries, snacks to savor. Has a playground too for the kiddies. Great 10/10 spot to pause your journey while up in the North lands.

Lovely stopover. Had a double cappuccino which was full bodied and delicious. The carrot cake muffin was moist and rich. Friendly and efficient service. Very pleasant surroundings (can definitely get cold though!). Can’t wait to stop by again and try more of their food and drink.

Such a lovely little café tucked away in the mountains near Mount Kenya! The view is absolutely stunning, and the place has such a calm, welcoming vibe. The coffee is rich and aromatic, clearly made with care, and the apple pie with cream is fantastic! It’s the perfect stop after exploring the area or hiking nearby. A hidden gem with heart, nature, and great coffee — definitely worth a visit if you’re around Mount Kenya!
